The encomienda was a system of labor used in the 1500s. It began in Spain. Later, it was used in the Americas and the Philippines.

In this system, the Spanish Crown gave grants to people. These people were called encomenderos. An encomendero was given a group of native people to manage. The Crown did not give the leader the land. The land still belonged to the native communities.

In theory, the system was a trade. The native people gave tribute. They provided things like maize, wheat, and pork. They also gave metals. In return, the encomendero was supposed to protect them. They were also meant to teach them the Spanish language.

In practice, the system was often very harsh. Many native people were forced to do hard work. Some faced extreme punishment.

Laws were made to try to help. In 1542, the New Laws were passed. These laws said the grants could not last forever. They were meant to end after two generations. However, many leaders did not follow these rules. The system finally ended in 1720.
