Sometimes, a few wealthy people own most of the land. They may own large ranches or big farms. Land reform can move this land to the people who work it. This can help families grow more food. It can also help people escape poverty. In some places, land is moved from people to the government. Other times, the government gives land back to small farms.

There are different ways to control land. Some people use formal systems. These use papers like land titles to show ownership. Other people use informal systems. This is often called land tenure. In these systems, a whole village might use the land together. They might not use papers at all.

Land reform can be a big deal. It can help a country grow. But it can also cause fights. Some people fear they will lose their power or their land. Changing these rules is often a very political task.
