In the early 1900s, women in Britain could not vote. Emily wanted to change this. She joined a group called the WSPU. This group used strong actions to get attention.

Emily was very brave and bold. She was arrested nine times for her work. She went on hunger strikes to protest. This means she refused to eat while in jail. Because of this, guards used force-feeding. This was a very painful way to give food to prisoners. Emily said it was like torture.

Emily also used other ways to protest. She broke windows and set fire to postboxes. She even hid in the Palace of Westminster overnight. In 1913, Emily went to a big horse race. She walked onto the track during the race. She was hit by the King's horse, Anmer. Emily died from her injuries. Many people came to her funeral. About 50,000 people watched her procession in London.
