Jones is best known for playing with John Coltrane. He was part of the John Coltrane Quartet. This group helped change the sound of jazz. They had a special way of playing with rhythm. Jones said playing in this band felt like perfect harmony.

Later, he led his own groups. One group was called The Elvin Jones Jazz Machine. He also played with his brothers. Hank was a pianist and Thad played the trumpet. Jones was a great teacher, too. He played in schools and gave free concerts in prisons. He even got an honorary degree from a music college. Many drummers say he was a big influence on them. He is a very important part of jazz history.
