It was made by Miles Davis in 1959. Davis led a small group of six musicians. This group included players on the trumpet, saxophone, piano, bass, and drums.

Most jazz at that time used many complex chords. Davis wanted to try something different. He used a style called modal jazz. This means the music is based on scales. Instead of following many chord changes, the players used scales. This gave them more freedom to make up melodies.

Davis did not let the band practice much. He gave them sketches of scales and melodies just before they recorded. This helped the music feel fresh and new. One song, "Flamenco Sketches," was finished on the very first try.

Many people call this the greatest jazz album ever made. It has changed many kinds of music. This includes jazz, rock, and even classical music. In the United States, over five million copies have been sold. It is a very important part of music history.
