He recorded it in New York City in 1969. Davis wanted to try new sounds. He used electric instruments like the guitar and electric piano. This was a big change for jazz music. He mixed jazz with rock and funk styles. This new way of playing is called jazz fusion.

Davis led a large group of musicians. They did not follow set notes. Instead, they used improvisation. This means they played what came to mind in the moment. Davis gave them simple musical sketches to follow. He even spoke to them during the recording. You can hear him snapping his fingers to keep the beat. He told the band to "keep it tight."

The music had a very busy rhythm. The group had many drummers and bass players. They all played at the same time. This created a big, active sound for the soloists. Davis played his trumpet in a loud and fast way.

Many people bought the album. It reached number 35 on the U.S. charts. It won a Grammy Award in 1971. It sold over one million copies in the U.S. Today, it is seen as a very important work of art.
