Bitches Brew is a famous studio album by the American jazz musician Miles Davis.

He was a leader of many bands and a great trumpet player. This album was very important because it changed how people heard jazz. Davis wanted to try new sounds with electric instruments. He used the electric piano and the electric guitar to make music. This helped him move away from traditional jazz rhythms. Instead, he used loose arrangements that sounded more like rock music. This new style is often called jazz fusion.

Recording the album was a very special way of working.

Davis gathered many musicians at Columbia's Studio B in New York City. The sessions took place from August 19 to August 21, 1969. Davis did not give the musicians set notes to play. He gave them simple musical sketches and chords instead. He told them they could play anything that came to mind. This is called improvisation, where musicians create music in the moment. You can even hear Davis's voice on the recordings. He would snap his fingers to show the beat. He would tell the band to "keep it tight."

The music had a very busy and powerful rhythm.

Davis used a very large group of players at once. The rhythm section had two bass players playing at the same time. There were also two or three drummers and several electric piano players. This created a huge, active space for the soloists to play. The main solo voices were the trumpet and the soprano saxophone. Davis played his trumpet in an aggressive and explosive way. He often played very fast and used high notes. This was different from his usual calm style.

After the music was recorded, a producer named Teo Macero helped finish it.

He edited the tracks by piecing short sections together. He sometimes looped small parts to make them repeat. Only one song, "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down," had no editing. The album was released on March 30, 1970. At first, some people did not know what to think of it. However, it soon became very popular. It reached number 35 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. It even won a Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album in 1971.

Bitches Brew has had a very long and lasting impact on music.

It helped start the jazz-rock genre that many others followed. In 1976, it was certified Gold by the RIAA. By 2003, it was certified Platinum for selling one million copies. Many famous magazines have named it one of the greatest albums ever. In 2025, the Library of Congress chose it for preservation. This means the album is considered very important to history. It remains a major influence on many different kinds of musicians today.
