It is located on the coast of West Africa. This building is the oldest European building in Sub-Saharan Africa. It was the very first trading post built on the Gulf of Guinea. Today, the castle is a major place for tourists to visit. UNESCO recognizes it as a World Heritage Site because of its history. It stands as a powerful reminder of the past.

The castle was first built by the Portuguese in 1482. They called it Castelo de São Jorge da Mina. This name means St. George of the Mine Castle. They chose this spot because of the local gold trade. The Portuguese brought many building parts on ten large ships. These parts were pre-fitted to be put together quickly. This was the first time such a method was used in this region.

Building the fort was a difficult and tense process. A leader named Diogo de Azambuja led the fleet to the coast. He met with a local chief named Kwamin Ansah. The Portuguese had to destroy some village homes to build the walls. This caused much anger among the local people. There were fights between the Portuguese and the villagers. Eventually, the first tower was finished in only twenty days.

Over many years, different nations controlled the castle. The Dutch seized the fort from the Portuguese in 1637. They used it as a capital for the Dutch Gold Coast. The castle became a very important stop during the Atlantic slave trade. Enslaved Africans were brought to the castle to be sold. They were traded for goods like textiles and horses. The Dutch continued this trade until the year 1814.

History changed many times for the land around the castle. In 1872, the United Kingdom took control of the territory. This happened through a treaty with the Dutch. Many years later, the area became the independent nation of Ghana in 1957. Ghana now controls the castle and protects its history. You can see how the castle has been cared for recently.
