society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some people believe in elitism. This is the idea that a small group is special. We call this group an elite. These people may have many good traits. They might be very smart or very rich. They may have fame or special skills. Some might even come from famous families.

People with elitism think these few leaders help society. They believe these leaders should have more power. This can lead to a small group making big choices. Elitists think only a few people truly change the world. They say most people just vote for these leaders.

Other people do not agree with this view. They believe in egalitarianism. This is the idea that everyone should be equal. They may also believe in populism. This is when many people want more say in things.

Society can also be split into layers. This is called social stratification. In many places, there are three main classes. These are the upper class, middle class, and lower class. Some people think power should stay with the elite. Others think power should be shared by all.
