An oligarchy is a way to rule. In this system, a small group holds the power. These leaders are often called oligarchs. They usually have a lot of money or high titles.

In ancient Greece, the city of Athens had many struggles with this. For a long time, rich men held the power. A man named Cleisthenes worked to change this. He helped start a democracy. This meant more people could have a say in rules. Later, a group called the Thirty Tyrants ruled for a short time. They were very harsh to the people.

Today, oligarchy can look different. Some say it happens when the wealthiest people use their money to shape laws. They might do this by giving money to elections. They might also use lobbying. Lobbying is when people try to influence political decisions. Some scholars say this happens in many places, like the United States or Russia. In Russia, some business leaders gained much control over the economy. In India, some people say a few billionaires have a lot of influence over trade. Even in a democracy, a small group can still have a big impact.
