Baylor's journey to the pros was full of hard work. He grew up in Washington, D.C., where he started playing at age 14. Because of segregation, he had limited access to many basketball courts. He played high school ball at Phelps Vocational and Spingarn High School. In 1954, he set a huge scoring record with 63 points. He then played college basketball at the College of Idaho and Seattle University. At Seattle, he led the team to the NCAA championship game. He was a dominant force, averaging many points and rebounds each game.

His professional career began with big honors and big numbers. In 1958, the Lakers chose him as the number one draft pick. He won the NBA Rookie of the Year award in 1959. During the 1960–61 season, he set a massive scoring record. He scored 71 points in a single game against the New York Knicks. He also grabbed 25 rebounds during that same game. Later, he set an NBA Finals record by scoring 61 points. These amazing feats showed the world just how skilled he was.

Even when life was difficult, Baylor kept playing at a high level. During the 1961–62 season, he served in the United States Army Reserve. He was stationed at Fort Lewis in Washington. He could only play for the Lakers on his weekend passes. He had to fly across the country every single weekend just to play. Despite this, he averaged 38.3 points per game that season. This was the highest scoring average in history for anyone except Wilt Chamberlain.
