He played as a point guard, which is a leader on the court. Robertson was famous for his ability to do many things at once. He was a master at scoring points, grabbing rebounds, and passing to teammates. In 1962, he became the first player in NBA history to average a triple-double. This means he reached double digits in three major stats every single game. Only two other players, Russell Westbrook and Nikola Jokić, have ever done this in a season.

His journey began with a lot of hard work and creativity. Growing up in Indianapolis, he did not have fancy equipment. He practiced his shooting by using tennis balls and rags wrapped in rubber bands. He would toss these makeshift balls into a peach basket behind his home. Later, he played for Crispus Attucks High School. His team won the state championship in 1955, which was the first for an all-black school. In 1956, his team had a perfect season with 31 wins and zero losses.

Robertson's path was often made difficult by the racism of that time. During his college years at the University of Cincinnati, he faced many unfair rules. Some Southern universities would not recruit black athletes. When his team traveled, he often had to sleep in college dorms instead of hotels. Despite these hardships, he was a superstar for the Bearcats. He set 14 NCAA records and 19 school records during his time there. He even won the national scoring title in each of his three years.

He also led the Royals to a great season where he averaged 31.4 points per game. In 1971, he helped the Milwaukee Bucks win their very first NBA title.

Beyond playing the game, Robertson worked to change it for everyone. As president of the NBA Players' Association, he led a famous legal case. This case, called Robertson v. National Basketball Association, changed how the league worked. It led to new rules for free agency and the draft. These changes helped all players earn higher salaries.
