Maravich learned the game through constant, intense practice. His father, Press Maravich, taught him the basics when Pete was only seven. The young player spent countless hours mastering ball control tricks. He practiced head fakes and long-range shots obsessively. He even once won a bet by spinning a ball on his finger for an hour. He was known for making amazing behind-the-back bounce passes. These skills made him a true star on the court.

His journey began in the steel town of Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. His father was the son of Serbian immigrants and a professional player. Pete played high school ball at Daniel High School in South Carolina. Later, he attended Needham B. Broughton High School in North Carolina. It was at Broughton that his famous nickname was born. He eventually moved to Louisiana to play for Louisiana State University. There, he played under the guidance of his father.

At LSU, Maravich set massive scoring records that lasted for decades.

He achieved this even though there was no three-point line. He also played before the shot clock was used to speed up games. These facts show just how much he dominated the sport.

After college, Maravich moved into the professional NBA. He was selected by the Atlanta Hawks in the 1970 draft. He later played for the expansion New Orleans Jazz. He also spent time with the Boston Celtics. Throughout his ten-year career, he was named an All-Star five times. He was also named to the All-NBA team four times.
