He is often called one of the greatest players to ever play the game. Nelson was born in 1912 near Waxahachie, Texas. He grew up in a family that valued faith and hard work. As a young boy, he worked as a caddie at a country club. He even practiced his putting in the dark. He would place a white handkerchief over the hole to find it. This early hard work helped him become a champion.

Nelson changed the way people play golf forever. During the 1930s, golf clubs changed from hickory to steel shafts. Nelson realized that players needed to change their swings too. He helped develop a new way to swing using more leg drive. This style became the foundation for the modern golf swing. Most top players today still use a version of this technique. He was even called the father of the modern golf swing. His skill allowed him to win many major championships. He won the Masters in 1937 and 1942. He also won the U.S. Open in 1939. He won the PGA Championship in 1940 and 1945.

His career reached a peak during a single, amazing year. In 1945, Nelson had the greatest year in PGA Tour history. He won 18 tournaments in that one year. Even more impressive, he won 11 tournaments in a row. These records have never been beaten by anyone else. He also set a record for the lowest scoring average. That record stood until Tiger Woods broke it in the year 2000. Nelson was also the first player to reach 50 career wins. This was a huge milestone for professional golf.

Nelson was known for more than just his winning ways. During World War II, he helped people by performing golf exhibitions. He used these events to raise money for charity. He often played with Jug McSpaden, and they were called the "Gold Dust Twins."

Nelson was also a very kind and sportsmanlike person. In 1974, he received the Bob Jones Award for his great sportsmanship. This is the highest honor from the United States Golf Association. He was later inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. He even received a Congressional Gold Medal in 2006.

After his busy playing years, Nelson lived many different lives. He retired from the tour at age 34 to become a rancher. He lived on a ranch in Roanoke, Texas. Later, he became a golf commentator on ABC Sports. He also helped young players become stars through coaching. He mentored famous golfers like Tom Watson. He even put his name on a tournament called the Byron Nelson Classic. This was the first PGA Tour event named after a professional golfer. His legacy lives on through the players he helped and the records he set.
