Elem Klimov was a famous filmmaker from Russia. He made many different kinds of movies. Some were funny stories for children. Others were serious dramas about history. He is most known for his final film, Come and See. This film tells the story of a 15-year-old boy. The boy joins a resistance group during World War Two. The setting is Byelorussia in the year 1943.

Klimov's work often dealt with hard topics. He sometimes faced trouble with the government. His 1964 film, Welcome, or No Trespassing, was briefly banned. It was a satire about a summer camp. Another film, Adventures of a Dentist, was a dark comedy. It was about a dentist with natural talent. Because he would not change the story, it was given a low classification. This meant it only played in 25 to 78 theaters.

Klimov had a very interesting early life. He was born in Stalingrad to a Russian family. His father was an investigator for the Communist Party. His name might have come from political leaders. It might also come from a character in a Jack London book. During the Battle of Stalingrad, his family had to leave home. They crossed the Volga River on a raft. He used these memories for his later films.

His personal life deeply changed his art. He married a director named Larisa Shepitko. She won a Golden Bear award in Berlin. Sadly, she died in a car accident in 1979. This loss had a profound impact on him. All his later films became tragedies. He made a 25-minute tribute called Larisa to honor her. He also finished a film she had started.

Klimov also helped other filmmakers in Russia. In 1986, he became the First Secretary of the Filmmakers' Union. He helped release many films that were once banned. This happened during a time of change called perestroika. He eventually left his post in 1988. He wanted to focus on making movies again. He died on October 26, 2003. He was buried at the Troyekurovskoye Cemetery.
