It means changing from old power sources to electric ones. This can happen in factories, homes, or even for trains. Today, it also means moving toward sustainable energy. This involves building smart grids to use renewable energy. We can use electricity for transport and heating too.

This change helps the planet stay healthy.

Before electricity, people used many different things for power.

Some shops used horses or even dogs on treadmills. Small tools like sewing machines used a foot treadle. Steam engines were another option for power. However, small steam engines were often too expensive. A small engine could cost $7,000 to buy. This was much more than using a horse.

Electric motors are much more efficient than these old ways. They work better than human or animal power.

Electric lighting changed how people lived.

It is much brighter than oil or gas lamps. It also does not leave black soot behind. Early electric light was safer than using gas. It was even cheaper than using oil for light. Some companies saved money on insurance because of it. This made electricity a very helpful invention. It was called a great engineering achievement of the 20th Century.

History shows how much electricity helps an economy grow.

In the U.S., power per person grew quickly. From 1870 to 1880, power was quite low. By 1950, it had increased many times over. In 1970, 49% of the world had electricity. By 1990, that number rose to 76%. In 2017, about 840 million people still lacked access. Most of these people live in Africa.

We can use electric vehicles for travel. We can also use heat pumps to warm homes. Heat pumps can be powered by solar panels. This helps us move away from using natural gas. Sunlight and wind provide energy that changes with weather. We use batteries to store this energy for later.
