Eleazar Wheelock was a famous teacher and minister in early America. He lived during a time of big changes in the colonies. He was born in Windham, Connecticut, in 1711. His parents, Ralph and Ruth, owned a large farm. Wheelock was a very smart student. He went to Yale College and graduated in 1733. He even won a special award for his work in classics.

Wheelock spent many years as a minister in Connecticut. He served the Second Congregational Church for 34 years. He was also a preacher who traveled to many places. This was during a time called the Great Awakening. This was a period when many people became very religious. Wheelock helped spread news about these religious changes. He also had a large family with eight children.

One of Wheelock's most important students was Samson Occom. Occom was a Mohegan man who learned English. Wheelock taught him for four years. Occom studied very hard and learned Hebrew. He eventually became a Presbyterian minister. This success made Wheelock want to start a special school. He founded the Moor's Charity School in Columbia, Connecticut. He wanted to teach Native American boys and girls.

Wheelock's plans for his school began to change over time. He wanted to add college classes for the sons of colonists. He wanted to teach philosophy and literature. In 1769, King George III gave him a charter. This is a formal document that allows a school to exist. Some people, like Samson Occom, disagreed with this change. They wanted the school to focus only on Native Americans. Wheelock used a donation from Lord Dartmouth to help. He named the new school Dartmouth College.

Dartmouth College moved to Hanover, New Hampshire. Wheelock became its very first president. In 1771, the college had its first graduation ceremony. Four students graduated that year, including Wheelock's son, John. Wheelock died in 1779 during the Revolutionary War. Many things in America are named after him today. For example, a town in Vermont is called Wheelock.
