He was one of the first professors of science in the United States. He also became the very first science professor at Yale University. Silliman spent his life studying how the natural world works. He looked at many different things like rocks, minerals, and even space rocks. His work helped make science a big part of American education. Because he was so important, many places and things are named after him today.

Silliman used many different ways to study nature. He was the first person in America to use fractional distillation. This is a way to separate different parts of a liquid by heating it. He also used this method to study minerals and rocks. He studied rocks to find special materials like tungsten and topaz.

He even studied a meteorite that fell from space in 1807. This space rock fell near Weston, Connecticut, and made loud noises. Silliman wrote the first scientific report about this meteorite in America.

His journey into science started a long time ago. He was born in August 1779 in a tavern in Connecticut.

He went to Yale to study and earned two degrees there. Even though he had never studied chemistry before, he became a chemistry professor. He had to study very hard with other professors to learn his job. In 1804, he gave the first science lectures ever held at Yale. He also traveled to the University of Edinburgh in 1805 to learn even more.

Silliman did many big things during his long career. He helped start the American Journal of Science in 1818. This is the oldest scientific journal that is still being printed in the United States.

He also helped find the first fossil fishes found in the United States. These were old fish bones found in the ground near Connecticut. In 1850, a mineral was named sillimanite to honor his hard work. He even helped make soda water popular by opening a soda fountain in 1806.

Silliman was also known for being a kind and fair teacher. At that time, most colleges did not allow women to be students.
