Eleazar Wheelock was a teacher and a minister. He was born in Connecticut in 1711. He went to Yale College. He was a very good student there.

Wheelock wanted to help Native Americans. He taught a student named Samson Occom. Occom was a Mohegan man. He became a minister too. This success led Wheelock to start a school. It was called Moor's Charity School. It was in Connecticut. He wanted to teach boys and girls many things.

Later, Wheelock wanted to start a college. He wanted to teach colonists about books and math. He got a charter from King George III in 1769. Some people did not agree with his plan. They wanted the school to stay for Native Americans only. Wheelock used money from a man named Lord Dartmouth. He named the school Dartmouth College. He moved it to New Hampshire. He was the first president of the college. He died in 1779. A town in Vermont is named after him.
