He was born in Massachusetts in 1796. As a boy, he did not go to school very often. He spent much of his time reading at a library. Later, he went to Brown University. He was the top student in his class when he graduated.

Mann became a leader in his state. In 1837, he became the Secretary of Education for Massachusetts. He wanted every child to have a good education. He believed schools should be for everyone, not just the rich. He helped build public schools using tax money. He also started normal schools. These were special schools to train professional teachers. Most of these teachers were women.

Mann also had new ideas for reading. He did not like teaching the alphabet one letter at a time. He thought it was boring for kids. Instead, he wanted children to learn whole words first. He believed this made reading more fun. Because of his work, many states changed their school systems. People call him the "Father of American Education."
