Rodrigo's life changed many times due to the wars around him. He first served King Sancho II of Castile. In 1065, he became a high-ranking commander for the king. He led many battles to help expand the kingdom's lands. However, King Sancho was killed in 1072. His brother, Alfonso VI, became the new king of Castile and León. Alfonso did not trust Rodrigo very much. Because of this lack of trust, Rodrigo was sent into exile in 1081.

During his time in exile, Rodrigo proved he was a great strategist. He found work defending the Muslim rulers of Zaragoza. He won many battles against different armies during these years. He even defeated a large Christian army led by King Sancho Ramírez of Aragon. Eventually, the new challenges in Spain forced King Alfonso to ask for Rodrigo's help again. Rodrigo returned to service for his former lord. He spent his later years fighting against the Almoravid Berbers.

He led a society where Christians and Muslims lived together. Rodrigo died on July 10, 1099. His wife, Jimena Díaz, took over as the ruler of Valencia after him.
