He lived in the 1800s. He wrote about music for many years. He worked for a paper called Neue Freie Presse.

Hanslick had strong ideas about what makes music good. He wrote a famous book in 1854. The book is called On the Musically Beautiful. He believed music is about its own sound and shape. He did not think music needed a story to be great.

Because of these ideas, he was part of a fight. People called this the War of the Romantics. Hanslick liked the music of Johannes Brahms. He thought Brahms followed the best traditions. Hanslick did not like the music of Richard Wagner. He thought Wagner relied too much on drama. He also disliked the works of Franz Liszt.
