Some people thought her look was strange or even a pose. However, many others praised her for her hard work and skill. Her poems were often set to beautiful music. One of her most famous poems is called "Still Falls the Rain." This poem was about the London Blitz during the war.

Edith's writing involved a lot of careful craftsmanship. She published her first poem, "The Drowned Suns," in 1913. Between 1916 and 1921, she worked with her brothers on a book called "Wheels." This was a collection of poems that they made together. She also wrote poems that used the rhythms of jazz. One poem, "Gold Coast Customs," was written in these new rhythms. She liked to support new and modern ways of writing poetry. She often disagreed with poets who only looked at the past.

Edith had a very complicated childhood in Yorkshire.

She was the oldest child of Sir George Sitwell and Lady Ida Sitwell. She described her early years as being very unhappy. She did not have a close relationship with her parents. Her father even made her use an iron frame for her back. Because of this, she spent much of her time with her governess, Helen Rootham. This bond with Helen lasted for many years of her life.

Throughout her life, Edith met many important people. She was close friends with the poet Siegfried Sassoon. He helped her by giving her advice on her poems. She also had a long friendship with a Russian painter named Pavel Tchelitchew. In 1948, she even toured the United States with her brothers. They went there to read her poetry to large crowds. She was also a very successful writer of books about history. She wrote about Queen Elizabeth I and other famous people.

Edith Sitwell remains a major figure in English literature.

She was honored as a Dame Commander in 1954. She was also the first woman to be a Companion of Literature. Even after she passed away in 1964, her work stayed important. Many composers still use her poems to create new music today. A blue plaque now marks the flat where she lived in Hampstead. This helps people remember the important writer who lived there.
