Economy of Australia

society Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Australia has a very large and developed mixed economy. This is the way the country manages its money and businesses. As of 2025, it was the 15th-largest national economy in the world. By June 2021, the total value was about $1.98 trillion. Most of the work happens in the service sector. This sector includes many different types of jobs that help people. In 2017, services made up 62.7% of the economy. This sector also employed 78.8% of all workers.

Many different industries work together to keep the country moving. Mining is a very important part of this system. In the 2009–10 period, mining added 8.4% to the GDP. This industry has helped Australia grow since the gold rush in the 1840s. The country also sells many goods to other nations. Australia is the 21st-largest exporter of goods in the world. It is also the 24th-largest importer of goods.

The Australian dollar is the money used here. Several Pacific nation states share this same currency. Large companies like BHP and Rio Tinto are part of this work.

Australia has a long history of economic changes. For a long time, the country had steady growth. It held a record for the longest run of uninterrupted growth. This lasted for 26 years without a technical recession. However, there were some difficult times in the past. In the early 1990s, the country had a recession. This happened after a large stock market collapse in 1987. During that time, unemployment rose to 10.8%.

Later, the country also faced a recession during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Trading with other countries is a huge part of life. Australia is closely linked to East and Southeast Asia. In 2016, about 64% of exports went to these regions. China is the main partner for both imports and exports. Australia is a member of many groups like the G20 and WTO. It has free trade agreements with many places. These include Canada, China, Japan, and the United States.

It also has a special agreement with New Zealand. This helps the two economies work closely together.

Today, the economy faces some new and hard jobs. The cost of living has gone up for many people. This means things like food and gas cost more. Since 2022, food prices rose by 11.7%. Gas prices rose even more by 33.9%. Housing is also a big concern for many families. Land prices have increased by more than 500% since the year 2000.

These changes make it harder for some people to save money. The government and banks work to manage these pressures.
