The government plays a big role in how money works. It owns 844 different companies. These state-owned companies have assets worth more than 1 trillion USD. The government also sets prices for basic things like rice and electricity. This helps keep costs steady for people living there.

Many different types of businesses help the economy grow. Small and medium companies make up about 61.7% of the economy. There are also many large private companies and foreign businesses.

The internet economy is also growing very fast. In 2022, it was worth US$77 billion. Experts think it will reach over US$130 billion by 2025. This shows how technology is changing the way people trade. A strong domestic market also helps the country stay steady. This means people inside Indonesia buy and sell many things to each other.

Indonesia's economic history has had many ups and downs. After it became independent, the economy was very weak.

In the 1940s, production of oil and rubber dropped a lot. The first state bank, BNI, started on July 5, 1946. In the 1960s, the economy faced a very hard time. There was high inflation and many people faced hunger. Later, a period called the New Order brought more discipline. During the 1970s, selling oil helped the economy grow by over 7% each year. This period helped the country become much more stable.

A major challenge arrived during the 1997 Asian financial crisis. This crisis caused the rupiah, the local money, to lose its value. The rupiah fell from 2,600 per USD to 15,000 per USD at times.

This led to political changes and the resignation of President Suharto in 1998. The economy shrank by 13.1% in 1998. However, the country began to recover after 1999. The government worked with the IMF to make new rules. These rules helped fix the banks and the way the country managed debt. This helped the economy grow again in the early 2000s.

In recent years, Indonesia has faced new hurdles. The COVID-19 pandemic caused the economy to shrink by 2.07% in 2020.

This was the worst performance since the 1997 crisis. But the economy started to bounce back in 2021. In 2022, the economy grew by 5.31% as restrictions were removed. High prices for goods that Indonesia sells to other countries also helped. However, some parts of the economy have had hard jobs lately. The manufacturing sector has lost about 300,000 jobs since 2023. Despite this, Indonesia remains a very important part of the world economy.
