Economy of Vietnam

society Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Vietnam has a very busy and growing economy. It is a mixed economy, which means it uses different ways to manage money and trade.

The country is an upper-middle income nation with a low cost of living. Today, it is the 34th largest economy in the world by nominal GDP. It is also the 21st largest when looking at purchasing power parity. This means the money people have can buy a lot of goods. Vietnam is a member of several big groups like the World Trade Organization.

In the past, the way people worked was very different. Long ago, most people were farmers who grew rice.

They built big walls called dykes to help water their crops. People also made beautiful things like silk and ceramics to trade. From the 9th to the 13th century, they traded with places like China and Java. By the 17th century, Vietnam was a very strong economic power in its region. However, things became hard in the late 18th century due to disasters and rebellions. This led to a period where the economy did not grow much at all.

Later, the country went through many big changes. During the time of French rule, the North and South were used differently. The French used the North for minerals like coal and the South for farming. In the South, they grew things like tea, cotton, and tobacco.

After 1954, the country was divided into two parts with different ideas. The North used socialism and the South used capitalism. A long war from 1955 to 1975 caused great harm to the economy. Many people died, and many others had to leave the country as refugees.

After the war, Vietnam faced many hard jobs. In the late 1970s, the country relied heavily on trade with the Soviet Union. When that partnership ended, Vietnam had to find new ways to grow. In 1986, leaders started a plan called Đổi Mới. This reform helped move the country toward a market economy. It allowed people to start private businesses and invited foreign companies to invest.

By the late 1990s, more than 30,000 private businesses had been created. This helped the economy grow by more than 7 percent every year.

Today, Vietnam is a leader in many global markets. It is a top exporter of agricultural goods like rice and cashews.

It is also very famous for its coffee.

Many people from other countries come to invest in Vietnamese companies. In the year 2000, a trade deal with the United States helped even more. Some experts believe Vietnam could be a top ten economy by the year 2050. This would be a huge achievement for the nation.
