In 1868, the Meiji Restoration began a new era. The government helped build factories, roads, and railways. This helped Japan become a modern world power. After the Second World War, the economy grew very fast. This time was called the Japanese Economic Miracle. Japan became the second-largest economy in 1988.

Things became difficult in the early 1990s. A large bubble in prices for stocks and land burst. This led to a long period of slow growth. People call these the Lost Decades.

From 1995 to 2023, the total value of the economy fell. The Bank of Japan tried to help by using new policies. They used something called quantitative easing to add money to the system. They even tried negative interest rates in 2016. These steps helped the country reach a 2% inflation target by 2024.

Today, Japan faces some very hard jobs for the future. The number of people living in Japan is going down. In 2010, there were 128.5 million people. By 2024, that number fell to 122.6 million.
