Earl learned to play music in a very special way. He took lessons in classical piano from a teacher named Mr. Von Holz. As a young boy, he had a very good ear and a great memory. He could listen to songs at theaters or park concerts and play them later. He could often play these songs months before the sheet music was even printed. By the age of eleven, he was already playing the organ in his church.

Earl's career grew quickly as he moved to new places. At age seventeen, he moved from Pennsylvania to work in a Pittsburgh nightclub. In 1921, he and a singer named Lois Deppe became the first African Americans to perform on the radio. Later, Earl moved to Chicago, which was the center of the jazz world. He met the famous trumpeter Louis Armstrong in a Chicago poolroom. They became good friends and recorded many important jazz songs together.

Earl had a very bold way of playing the piano. He used fast notes to make the piano sound like a trumpet. This style helped the music stand out even on old pianos without amplifiers. In 1928, he opened his own big band at the Grand Terrace Cafe. He called his group the "Organization." This band could have up to 28 musicians playing at once. They played many shows every single week during the Great Depression.
