Ernst Friedrich Schumacher was a thinker who studied economics and how people work.

He was born in Bonn, Germany, in 1911. His father was a professor who taught about political economy. Schumacher studied in Germany and then moved to England in 1930. He went to New College, Oxford, as a Rhodes Scholar. He also studied at Columbia University in New York City. He earned a diploma in economics before working in business and farming.

During World War II, Schumacher faced a very difficult time. Because he was German, he was held on an isolated English farm. He was called an "enemy alien" during this period. While working in the fields, he wrote a paper called "Multilateral Clearing." A famous economist named John Maynard Keynes read his work. Keynes was so impressed that he helped Schumacher get released. Schumacher then helped the British government with economic tasks during the war.

After the war, Schumacher held many important jobs. He helped rebuild the German economy for the British Control Commission. From 1950 to 1970, he was the Chief Economic Adviser to the National Coal Board. This was a huge organization with 800,000 employees. Schumacher believed the world should use coal instead of petroleum. He worried that oil was a finite resource that would run out. He also feared that oil prices would become too high.

Schumacher traveled to many places, including Burma, in 1955. He saw that people needed tools that fit their local needs. He called this idea "appropriate technology." This means using tools that are easy to use and good for nature. He believed that making things from local resources was the best way to live. In 1966, he started the Intermediate Technology Development Group. This group is now known as Practical Action.

In 1973, he published his most famous book, "Small Is Beautiful."

The book argues that we must protect our natural world for the future. Schumacher believed that big organizations are often hard to manage. He thought small communities and nations often do better economically. He argued that "bigness" can cause many social problems. His ideas helped start the modern environmental movement. Many people still use his ideas to help the planet today.
