Vertov worked with his family. His wife, Elizaveta Svilova, was an editor and director. His brothers, Boris and Mikhail, were also filmmakers. They worked on a special film train. This train had tools to shoot and edit film. It traveled to help boost the spirit of people during a war.

He made a series called Kino-Pravda. This name means "film truth." He filmed everyday things like markets and schools. He did not like fake stories or plays. He wanted to show life as it is. His most famous work is Man with a Movie Camera. It was made in 1929. Critics say it is one of the greatest films ever made. He used tricks like fast motion to show the truth of how we see things.
