These families often pass power to their children. Some families rule for a very long time. The Imperial House of Japan has ruled for over 1,500 years. The royal family in Tonga has also ruled for a long time.

Historians use dynasties to group times in history. They might talk about the era of Ancient Egypt or China. This helps show when a certain family held power.

Rules decide who becomes the next leader. In the past, power often passed from fathers to sons. If a daughter became a leader, the family name might change to her husband's name. Today, many European royal families keep their original names through women.
