In many monarchies, power stays in one family. This is called a hereditary monarchy. When one ruler dies, their child or relative takes over. This family line is called a dynasty.

Some monarchs are even chosen by a vote. These are called elective monarchies.

There are two main types of monarchy today. In an absolute monarchy, the ruler has all the power.

Most modern monarchies are different. They are called constitutional monarchies. These rulers follow a set of rules called a constitution. They often have only ceremonial roles. This means they act as symbols for their nation. They may have very little real political power.

Monarchies have been around for a long time. Some of the oldest ones were in Ancient Egypt. Today, forty-three nations still have a monarch.
