A parliamentary system is a way to run a country. In this system, leaders work closely with a parliament. The parliament is a group of people who make laws.

The head of government must have the support of the parliament. If the parliament no longer supports them, they may have to leave. This is called having "confidence." In some lands, a king or queen is the head of state. They are a ceremonial leader. This means they have a special role but do not make the main rules.

Some parliaments have one group of people. Others have two groups. These are called chambers. A two-chamber system is called bicameral.

This way of leading started long ago in Europe. One early example was in Iceland around the year 930. In England, leaders like Simon de Montfort helped change how parliaments worked. Later, the British system spread to many places. You can find these systems in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Many countries in Europe use this system today, too.
