A dynasty is a sequence of rulers coming from the same family.

In the context of a monarchy, a dynasty represents a line of succession. This family is often referred to as a "house," such as the House of Windsor or the House of Bourbon. A house can be imperial, royal, or noble. While these families often hold political power, a house may exist even if it is not currently ruling. The term "dynast" describes a member of such a family. This can refer to someone with a legal right to succeed to a throne. However, the term is also used informally for families with great influence in other areas, like a dynasty of actors or business owners.

Dynasties function through specific rules of succession that determine how power moves between generations. Before the 18th century, most systems were patrilineal. This means the line of succession followed the male line, often using laws like the Frankish Salic law. In these systems, if a daughter inherited power, the dynasty name usually changed to her husband's family name. Modern European monarchies have changed this convention. They now use laws to maintain the original dynastic name even when succession occurs through a female. For example, the House of Windsor remains the name for the British monarchy through the children of Queen Elizabeth II.

Marriage plays a critical role in maintaining a dynasty's power and legal standing. A "dynastic marriage" is a union that follows the specific laws of a royal house. These marriages ensure that any children born to the couple are eligible to inherit the throne. For instance, the marriage of King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands was considered dynastic. This allowed his eldest child, Princess Catharina-Amalia, to become the heir apparent. Conversely, if a marriage lacks official government or parliamentary approval, rights can be lost. Prince Friso of the Netherlands lost his royal titles and his place in the line of succession because his marriage lacked this support.

Strategic marriages were often used to expand the influence of a family. Empress Maria Theresa of the Habsburg dynasty is a notable example.

She married Francis Stephen of Lorraine in 1736. This union helped found the new House of Habsburg-Lorraine. Maria Theresa was the only child of Emperor Charles VI. To ensure her monarchy remained undivided, the Emperor issued the Pragmatic Sanction of 1713. This edict allowed her to inherit the throne. Through her children, Maria Theresa married into various other European dynasties, a policy that contributed to the Pax Austriaca.

Historians use the framework of successive dynasties to organize the timeline of human civilization. By grouping events under specific families, they can define distinct eras of history. For example, the history of Ancient Egypt is often studied through its various dynasties from 3100 to 30 BC. Similarly, the history of Imperial China is periodized using the reigns of its many families, such as the Ming dynasty. This method allows researchers to categorize not just rulers, but also the specific trends, events, and artifacts belonging to a particular era.

Some dynasties demonstrate incredible longevity, lasting for many centuries. The Imperial House of Japan is considered the world's oldest continuous royal dynasty, with a history spanning over 1,500 years since at least the 5th century.

The royal family of Tonga also shows great continuity, with a lineage dating back to approximately 950 CE. In Europe, the House of Bourbon is the oldest still reigning dynasty, tracing its roots to the Capetian dynasty of the 9th century.

Other long-lived groups include the Silla kingdom, which lasted 992 years, and the Bagrationi house, which ruled for over 1,000 years.

Dynastic systems are complex and can involve many different types of descent. While many follow a single line, some systems are "polydynastic." This means the most senior members of several parallel dynasties might share the line of succession. There are also differences between patrilineal descent and cognatic descent. A person might be a dynast of a specific country because they are in the line of succession, even if they are not a member of the primary family house. For example, David Armstrong-Jones is a British dynast because he is in the line of succession, but he is not a member of the House of Windsor because he is a nephew rather than a patrilineal descendant. These overlapping rules show how deeply interconnected royal history can be.
