Emperor

society Maturity 13-18 Next article →

An emperor is a male ruler of an empire. This title represents one of the highest levels of monarchic rank. In many historical contexts, an emperor holds a position that surpasses a king. While a king might be required to pay tribute to another ruler, an emperor is theoretically free from such restraints. This independence is a key part of the definition. Typically, an emperor governs over more than one nation or distinct territory. This collection of lands is what forms an empire.

The term "empress" is the female equivalent of the title. It can describe different roles depending on how the woman holds power. An empress consort is the wife of an emperor. An empress dowager is the mother or grandmother of an emperor. Some women rule in their own right and name. These women are called an empress regnant or an empress suo jure.

The history of the title is deeply tied to the Roman Empire. In the late 1st century BC, Rome transitioned from a republic to a monarchy. Romans disliked the word "king," so they used different titles. Augustus is considered the first Roman emperor, beginning his rule in 27 BC. He established his power by holding many different Republican offices at once. He did not have the time limits that other officials faced. This period of rule is known as the principate. Augustus also used the title "princeps," meaning first citizen. His successors often used the title "imperator," which originally meant a military commander.

As the Roman system changed, new titles and traditions emerged. The name "Caesar" became a famous honorific for Roman rulers. This name was so enduring that it influenced many other languages. In German, the title became "Kaiser." In several Slavic languages, it became "Tsar." Even after Peter the Great adopted the title Emperor of All Russia in 1721, the title Tsar remained common. Other cultures used different names for similar levels of authority. These included "Khalifa," "Huangdi," and "Great Khan."

In Western Europe, the title of Holy Roman Emperor was very significant. These rulers claimed they were the successors to the ancient Roman emperors. This connection to Roman tradition was a major part of their state ideology. The title was technically elective, meaning it was chosen by a vote. However, by the late 16th century, the Habsburg Archdukes of Austria began to inherit it. By the 19th century, the Holy Roman Emperor held little power outside German-speaking lands. Napoleon Bonaparte was crowned Emperor of the French in 1804. Shortly after, Francis II declared himself Emperor of Austria. Francis II eventually abdicated the Holy Roman position in 1806.

Throughout history, the concept of an empire has expanded. Sometimes, historians use the word "empire" to describe large states that were not ruled by an emperor. For example, the Athenian Empire and the Soviet Union are often described this way. By the mid-18th century, "empire" began to describe vast territorial holdings rather than just a ruler's title. This shows how the meaning of the word can shift over time. In the past, the title was also used by the Inca and Aztec monarchs.

Today, the world of monarchs has changed significantly. Most large empires no longer exist in their historical forms. However, the title of emperor remains in use in one specific place. The Emperor of Japan is the only currently reigning monarch whose title is translated as "Emperor" in English. This shows the lasting nature of imperial traditions. In modern diplomacy, the size and scope of a territory can still affect how leaders are treated. Precedence among heads of state is often decided by their rank or how long they have been in office.
