The dunnart is a tiny, interesting mammal. It belongs to a group called marsupials. These animals have very narrow feet. Most dunnarts are about the size of a mouse.

They play an important role in their homes. Most dunnarts are insectivorous. This means they mostly eat insects. They hunt small bugs to stay healthy.

Finding a dunnart in the wild is a special event. There are 19 different species in this group. These animals live in Australia or New Guinea. Each species has its own unique look. Some have fat tails, like the fat-tailed dunnart. Others have white tails or grey bellies. You might even see a red-cheeked dunnart.

There are also stripe-faced and sooty dunnarts.

Scientists have studied these animals for a long time. John Gould named one type in 1844. It was called Phascogale crassicaudata. Later, Oldfield Thomas gave the group a new name. He used the name Sminthopsis in 1887. He did this because an older name was already taken. That old name belonged to a group of beetles.

There are many specific names for these small creatures. The Kakadu dunnart and the Bindi dunnart are two examples. You can find the Julia Creek dunnart too. Other species include the Chestnut and the Little long-tailed dunnart. Some are called the Hairy-footed or Sandhill dunnart. The American Society of Mammalogists even recognizes two more. These are Froggatt's dunnart and Stalker's dunnart.

Even tiny things can be quite amazing. A male dunnart has a very special trait. It has a Y chromosome in its cells. This is a tiny part of how bodies work. The dunnart has the smallest Y chromosome known in any mammal. This is a very small part of a very small animal. It shows how much detail exists in nature.
