Dow Chemical Company

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The Dow Chemical Company is a huge business in the world of science. It is a large American corporation based in Midland, Michigan. In 2021, it was one of the three largest chemical producers on Earth. Most people do not buy its products directly at a store. Instead, it sells to other industries that make goods for us. This is why people call it the "chemical companies' chemical company." Today, it works in about 160 different countries.

The company started with one clever idea from a chemist. Herbert Henry Dow founded the business in 1897. He found a way to pull bromine out of salty water called brine. This brine was trapped deep underground in Michigan. At first, the company only sold bleach and potassium bromide. By 1902, they were making 72 tons of bleach every single day.

As the years passed, the company grew by making many new things. This is called diversification, which means adding different products. During World War I, Dow made magnesium for bright flares. They also made chemicals for medicines and explosives. In the 1930s, they began making plastic resins. They made ethylcellulose in 1935 and polystyrene in 1937.

World War II was a very busy time for the company. Dow built a huge plant in Freeport, Texas, to make magnesium from seawater. This plant was the largest site of its kind in the country. In 1942, Dow's plants made 84 percent of all magnesium in the United States. This metal was very important for making lightweight parts for airplanes. They also helped make synthetic rubber when natural rubber was hard to get.

Many leaders helped Dow grow into a global name. Willard Dow was the son of the founder and led the company after 1930. Later, Leland Doan helped the company sell products directly to families. He helped expand sales from $200 million to $890 million. Ted Doan also led the company and helped it grow across the ocean. He helped set up offices on every continent to manage the business.
