Bromine is a unique chemical element with the symbol Br. It is a reddish-brown liquid at room temperature.

This liquid evaporates very easily to create a dark gas. This gas has a sharp and pungent smell. The name comes from the Greek word "bromos," which means stench.

Bromine is a halogen, which is a group of elements. It sits between chlorine and iodine in its properties.

This means it is more reactive than iodine but less reactive than chlorine.

Because bromine is so reactive, you cannot find it alone in nature. Instead, it stays tucked inside mineral salts.

These salts are often found in the Earth's crust. However, bromine builds up in the oceans because it dissolves so well in water.

Companies extract the element from brine evaporation ponds. This work happens mostly in the United States and Israel.

In the ocean, the mass of bromine is about one three-hundredth the mass of chlorine. This process turns salty water into useful chemicals.

Two chemists discovered bromine on their own around the same time. Carl Jacob Löwig found it in 1825 in a mineral spring.

He used a liquid called diethyl ether to extract it. Antoine Jérôme Balard found it in 1826 from seaweed ash.

He was working in the salt marshes of Montpellier. At first, Balard called the element "muride" after the Latin word for brine. Later, he changed the name to bromine because of its strong smell.

Bromine is used in many different ways today. One major use is as a fire retardant.

This means it is added to things to help stop fires from spreading. More than half of the bromine made each year goes to this job. It is also used in photographic film and well drilling fluids.

In the past, doctors used potassium bromide as a medicine. It helped calm the central nervous system as a sedative.

Some bromine compounds are even used as antiepileptics today.

While bromine is useful, it can also be harmful. Large amounts of bromide salts are toxic to people.

This can cause a condition called bromism. In the atmosphere, some bromine compounds can cause ozone depletion.

This happens when sunlight breaks the compounds apart into free atoms. However, bromine is also a trace element that animals need. It helps all animals develop collagen to stay healthy.
