Iodine is a very special chemical element. It is the heaviest of the stable halogens, which are a group of elements in the periodic table.

Under normal conditions, it looks like a dark, shiny, non-metallic solid. If you heat it up, it melts into a deep violet liquid. If you heat it even more, it turns into a beautiful violet gas.

This gas can also turn straight from a solid into a gas. Scientists call this process sublimation. This makes it very easy to see the bright purple color of iodine.

How does iodine work in our world? It is a very important mineral for living things. Our bodies use it to make thyroid hormones. These hormones are like tiny messengers that help our bodies work correctly.

If people do not get enough iodine, it can cause big problems. It is the main preventable cause of intellectual disabilities. About two billion people in the world are affected by a lack of iodine. Because it is so vital for health, it is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.

A French chemist named Bernard Courtois discovered iodine in 1811. He was working with ashes made from seaweed.

He was trying to make saltpetre for gunpowder during the Napoleonic Wars. While working with copper vessels and sulfuric acid, a violet vapor rose up. He saw this vapor turn back into dark crystals on cold surfaces. Two years later, Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac named it iodine. He chose this name from the Greek word "iodes," which means violet.

There are many interesting facts about how iodine behaves. It is the fourth member of the halogen group.

In its solid form, it has a special crystal structure. It can also be used as a catalyst, which helps speed up chemical reactions. For example, it helps in making acetic acid and some polymers. Today, the two main places that produce iodine are Chile and Japan. These countries provide much of what the world needs.

You can see how iodine connects to things you might know. Doctors use it to keep people safe during surgery. In 1908, a surgeon named Antonio Grossich used a liquid called tincture of iodine. This helped him quickly clean human skin to kill germs.

Some types of iodine are even used in hospital scans. They help doctors see inside the body using X-rays or special imaging. Even in space, scientists look at how elements like iodine were formed. It is a tiny element that plays a huge role in our lives.
