Dorgon was the 14th son in his family. He grew up to be a strong leader. He spent much of his life leading many military campaigns.

Dorgon's work as a leader happened in many steps. First, he fought against the Mongols and the Koreans. Later, he helped the Qing group take over China. In 1644, a big fight happened at Shanhai Pass.

Dorgon led his cavalry to win this battle. This victory helped his army enter Beijing. Beijing was the capital of the old Ming dynasty. He helped the young Shunzhi Emperor take the throne.

After the conquest, Dorgon became the Prince-Regent. A regent is a person who rules for a young leader. He ruled from 1643 until 1650. He served during the early years of the Shunzhi Emperor.

Dorgon held many high titles during this time. In 1645, he was called the Emperor's Uncle. By 1649, his title changed to Emperor's Father. He was one of the most powerful people in China.

Dorgon made many big changes for the people. He ordered that all Han Chinese men must shave their heads. They had to wear their hair in long queues. This was the Manchu way of dressing.

He also helped set up the civil service exams again. This helped the new government work better. He even moved different groups of soldiers into specific parts of Beijing. These groups were known as the Banners.

Dorgon died in 1650 during a hunting trip. His life ended with much change for China. A year later, the Shunzhi Emperor was very angry. The Emperor took away Dorgon's titles and honors.
