He is most recognized for serving as the United States Secretary of Defense during two different eras. He held this position under President Gerald Ford from 1975 to 1977. He later served again under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2006. Because of these two terms, he holds the unique distinction of being both the youngest and the oldest person to serve as Secretary of Defense. His career spanned military service, high-level government administration, and leadership in the private corporate sector.

Born in Chicago on July 9, 1932, Rumsfeld grew up in Winnetka, Illinois.

Rumsfeld's political rise began in the early 1960s in Illinois. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1962, representing the 13th Congressional District.

He served four terms in Congress and was a key figure among a group of younger Republicans known as the "Young Turks." This group encouraged Gerald Ford to become the House Minority Leader. During his time in Congress, Rumsfeld supported the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and 1968, as well as the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He also expressed concerns regarding the management of the Vietnam War, traveling to the region for a fact-finding mission.

In 1969, President Richard Nixon appointed Rumsfeld to several executive roles. He served as the director of the Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO).

In this diplomatic capacity, he represented American interests in military and nuclear planning matters.

After his first term as Secretary of Defense ended in 1977, Rumsfeld transitioned into the business world. He held several high-level leadership positions in major corporations. He served as the president and CEO of the pharmaceutical company G. D. Searle & Company. He also worked as the CEO of General Instrument from 1990 to 1993. Later, he became the chairman of Gilead Sciences, a role he held from 1997 until 2001. These positions allowed him to apply leadership principles to the private financial sector before returning to government service.

His second term as Secretary of Defense began in January 2001.

This period was marked by significant global conflict. Rumsfeld was a central figure in the 2001 United States invasion of Afghanistan and the 2003 invasion of Iraq. His leadership during the Iraq War was highly controversial. He claimed that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction, but no such stockpiles were ever discovered. Additionally, his tenure faced intense scrutiny regarding the treatment of prisoners, specifically involving the Abu Ghraib scandal.

As political support for his policies declined, Rumsfeld resigned from his post in late 2006.
