He served as the 46th vice president of the United States from 2001 to 2009. He worked under President George W. Bush. Many historians consider him the most powerful vice president in U.S. history. Cheney was a member of the Republican Party. His career included roles in the White House, Congress, and the Department of Defense. He was a central figure in many significant national decisions.

Cheney's political journey began with several foundational roles. He started as an intern for Congressman William A. Steiger. He later joined the staff of Donald Rumsfeld. Cheney served as White House chief of staff from 1975 to 1977. This role meant he was the top aide to President Gerald Ford. In 1978, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He represented Wyoming's at-large congressional district for ten years. During this time, he rose to become the House minority whip in 1989.

In 1989, President George H. W. Bush appointed Cheney as the 17th Secretary of Defense.

He held this position until 1993. As secretary, he managed large-scale military operations. He oversaw Operation Just Cause in Panama in 1989. He also directed Operation Desert Storm in the Middle East in 1991. For his service, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1991. Between his government roles, he served as the chairman and CEO of Halliburton. He received a $33.7 million severance package from that company.

Cheney reached the vice presidency through the 2000 presidential election.

He argued that the Saddam Hussein regime had weapons of mass destruction. He also claimed the regime had a relationship with al-Qaeda. However, these specific allegations were never substantiated by evidence. He was also known to pressure the intelligence community. He wanted intelligence that supported the administration's reasons for invading Iraq. This period of his career was highly controversial and led to significant international debate.

His leadership style and policies faced intense criticism. Some opponents disagreed with his support for warrantless surveillance by the NSA. Others criticized his endorsement of enhanced interrogation techniques. These techniques are often described as torture. Cheney's popularity changed greatly during his time in office. Immediately after the September 11 attacks, his approval rating reached 68%. By the end of his tenure, his approval rating had dropped to 13%. This reflected the deep divisions in the country over his policies.

Cheney also showed moments of political independence. In 2004, he supported same-sex marriage. This stance put him at odds with President Bush. He stated that such matters should be decided by individual states. In his later years, his political views shifted again. He endorsed Donald Trump in 2016 and 2020. However, he became a critic of Trump after the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. He eventually endorsed Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.
