Dmitri Mendeleev was a famous Russian chemist.

He is best known for creating the periodic table. This is a special chart used to organize chemical elements. Mendeleev is often called the Father of the Periodic Table. His work helped scientists understand the building blocks of our world. He turned chemistry into an organized science.

His discovery worked by looking for patterns in elements. In 1863, scientists only knew of 56 elements. Mendeleev organized them by their atomic weight. Atomic weight is how heavy an element is. He also used valence, which is how elements join together.

He noticed that properties repeated in a regular way. He said he saw this perfect arrangement in a dream. He woke up and wrote it down on paper immediately.

Mendeleev was born in 1834 in a village near Tobolsk.

He was the youngest of 17 siblings. His mother, Maria, worked hard to support the family. She even restarted a glass factory to help. After his father died, Mendeleev moved to study in Moscow. Later, he moved to Saint Petersburg to attend school.

He eventually became a professor at several universities.

His periodic table was very accurate. He used it to fix mistakes about known elements. For example, he corrected the weight of uranium. He also predicted three elements that no one had found yet.

He called these missing pieces ekaaluminium, ekaboron, and ekasilicon. Later, scientists discovered gallium, scandium, and germanium. These new elements fit his empty spaces perfectly. This proved his system was correct.

Today, we still use his ideas in every science classroom. Mendeleev's periodic law explains how the world is put together. You can see his influence in how we name new elements. One element, mendelevium, was named to honor him.
