His periodic system was much more than just a list. It acted as a predictive tool for future discoveries. Mendeleev left empty spaces in his table for elements that had not been found yet. He used Sanskrit prefixes to name these missing pieces. He called them ekaaluminium, ekaboron, and ekasilicon. These names meant "one," "two," and "three" aluminum, boron, and silicon. He predicted these elements would have specific properties based on their positions. This was a bold move that some scientists initially dismissed.

The accuracy of his predictions changed science forever. In 1875, scientists discovered gallium, which matched his ekaaluminium. In 1886, they found germanium, which matched his ekasilicon. Scandium was also discovered, fitting his ekaboron prediction. Mendeleev also used his law to correct existing data. For example, he realized the accepted atomic weight and valence of uranium were wrong. He changed the weight from 120 to 240. He also changed the valence from 3 to 6. Modern measurements show he was very close to the true values.
