Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev was a pioneering Russian chemist.

He is most famous for formulating the periodic law. This law describes how the properties of chemical elements repeat in regular patterns. By using this law, he created a version of the periodic table. This table organizes the building blocks of matter into a logical system. His work transformed chemistry from a collection of facts into an organized science. Because of his massive impact, he is often called the Father of the Periodic Table.

Mendeleev's discovery relied on the relationship between atomic weight and valence. Atomic weight, or relative atomic mass, is a measure of how heavy an element is. Valence describes how an element combines with others. In 1863, scientists only knew of 56 elements. Mendeleev began classifying these elements by their chemical properties. He noticed that when elements were arranged by weight, their characteristics appeared to repeat. He claimed to have seen this complete arrangement in a dream. Upon waking, he immediately wrote the arrangement down on paper.

His periodic system was much more than just a list. It acted as a predictive tool for future discoveries. Mendeleev left empty spaces in his table for elements that had not been found yet. He used Sanskrit prefixes to name these missing pieces. He called them ekaaluminium, ekaboron, and ekasilicon. These names meant "one," "two," and "three" aluminum, boron, and silicon. He predicted these elements would have specific properties based on their positions. This was a bold move that some scientists initially dismissed.

The accuracy of his predictions changed science forever. In 1875, scientists discovered gallium, which matched his ekaaluminium. In 1886, they found germanium, which matched his ekasilicon. Scandium was also discovered, fitting his ekaboron prediction. Mendeleev also used his law to correct existing data. For example, he realized the accepted atomic weight and valence of uranium were wrong. He changed the weight from 120 to 240. He also changed the valence from 3 to 6. Modern measurements show he was very close to the true values.

Mendeleev's early life was marked by significant challenges. He was born in 1834 in a village near Tobolsk, Siberia.

He was the youngest of 17 siblings. His father, Ivan, was a teacher who eventually became blind. This loss of income forced Mendeleev's mother, Maria, to restart an abandoned glass factory. After his father died and the factory burned, Mendeleev moved to study. He traveled from Siberia to Moscow and then to Saint Petersburg.

These moves were necessary to pursue his education at the Main Pedagogical Institute.

His professional career saw him reach the highest levels of academia. He became a professor at the Saint Petersburg Technological Institute and Saint Petersburg State University. By 1871, he had turned Saint Petersburg into a global center for chemistry research. He also published a definitive textbook called *Principles of Chemistry*. This work earned him the Demidov Prize from the Petersburg Academy of Sciences. Later in life, he served as the director of the Bureau of Weights and Measures. Even though he faced personal controversies, his scientific reputation remained world-class.

Mendeleev's legacy continues to shape the modern world. His periodic law remains a fundamental concept in every chemistry classroom. The way we understand the structure of matter begins with his organized system. Scientists even named the synthetic element mendelevium to honor his contributions. His ability to see patterns in complex data allowed him to map the unknown. He proved that nature follows predictable rules. This discovery provided a roadmap for all future chemical research.
