In 1822, he became a professor at the University of Berlin. He was later named an ordinary professor in 1825. He was a member of many science groups. He even became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. The Royal Society of London gave him a gold medal.

He used the minerals calcite and aragonite to demonstrate this property.
In the 1830s, Mitscherlich performed groundbreaking work on chemical reactions. He investigated the synthesis of diethyl ether using ethanol and sulfuric acid. He observed a specific behavior during this chemical process. The sulfuric acid was necessary for the reaction to proceed. However, he realized the acid was not actually consumed by the reaction. This discovery was essential for understanding how certain substances speed up reactions. After reviewing his findings, the chemist Jöns Jacob Berzelius coined the term "catalysis." Catalysis describes a process where a substance enables a reaction without being used up.
Mitscherlich's path to science was quite unexpected. He was born in 1794 in Neuende. He originally studied philology, which is the study of language and literature. He focused on the Persian language and hoped to join a French embassy. However, the abdication of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1814 changed his plans. He decided to study medicine to allow for easier travel. While studying at the University of Göttingen, he discovered a passion for chemistry. This shift in focus led him to the laboratory instead of the East.
His professional life was marked by many prestigious appointments. He worked in the laboratory of Heinrich Friedrich Link in Berlin. Later, he studied in Stockholm at the Karolinska Institutet with Berzelius. In 1822, he became an extraordinary professor at the University of Berlin. By 1825, he was appointed as an ordinary professor. He was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1823. The Royal Society of London also honored him with a gold medal for his work on isomorphism. 
Mitscherlich was also a prolific author and researcher. He wrote a massive textbook titled Lehrbuch der Chemie. The first volume appeared in 1829, and the work continued through 1840. He published approximately 76 scientific papers during his lifetime. In his later years, he moved from inorganic chemistry to organic chemistry. He also studied the geology of volcanic regions like the Eifel. Although he did not publish papers on volcanism, his notes were published after his death. He died in 1863 in Schöneberg.
