These fossils belong to a group called the Dmanisi hominins. They lived a very long time ago. Most of their remains are between 1.77 and 1.85 million years old.

This makes them the earliest well-dated fossils of early humans in Eurasia. They are also the best-preserved fossils from a single site this old. Finding them helps us understand how early people first moved out of Africa.

The climate in Georgia was more humid and forested than it is today. It felt more like a Mediterranean climate with forests and grasslands. They lived near the shore of an ancient lake. This area was full of many different kinds of animals. The nice weather might have acted as a refuge for them. They could reach this place from Africa through a path called the Levantine corridor.

They found over a hundred bones from bodies and limbs. They also found five very famous skulls. These skulls are known as Dmanisi Skulls 1 through 5. The people used stone tools from the Oldowan tradition. These tools were very simple and old. Their bodies were small, standing about 145 to 166 cm tall. Their brains were also small, measuring between 545 and 775 cc.

Learning about these people took many years of hard work. Excavations first began in 1936 thanks to Ivane Javakhishvili. In 1982, archaeologists found deep pits in the sandy clay. They soon found fossilized animal bones inside those pits. In 1991, a team led by Medea Nioradze and Antje Justus found a jawbone. This was a huge moment for science. It was the first time researchers found early human relatives in this area. They spent many years carefully digging up more pieces.

Even today, experts are still debating what to call these people. Some scientists think they are a new species called Homo georgicus. Others believe they are a type of Homo erectus. The skulls look very different from one another. Some show features like modern humans. Other parts of their bodies look more like earlier ancestors. This mix of traits makes them very special to study. They show us how much early humans could change and vary.

Researchers have discovered over one hundred postcranial fossils at the site. Postcranial fossils are bones from the body, such as the arms, legs, ribs, and feet.

They also found five famous, well-preserved skulls known as Dmanisi Skulls 1 through 5. These individuals lived between 1.77 and 1.85 million years ago. The site was once a lush environment near an ancient lake shore. It featured forests and grasslands with a humid, Mediterranean-style climate. This favorable environment may have acted as a refuge for these early people.

The anatomy of the Dmanisi hominins shows a mosaic of different traits. A mosaic means they had a mix of features from different groups. The history of these discoveries began with early work in 1936. In 1982, archaeologists found deep pits in sandy clay. They soon found fossilized animal bones within these pits. A major breakthrough occurred on September 25, 1991. A team led by Medea Nioradze and Antje Justus uncovered a mandible, which is a jawbone. This jaw, named D211, was a primate jaw with a complete row of teeth. It was the first evidence of early Homo outside of Africa. This discovery was confirmed when the underlying basalt rocks were dated to 1.8 million years old.

Scientists have found several distinct skulls that provide different clues. Skull 1 is an adult skull with thick brow ridges. Skull 2 is a more gracile, or slender, skull likely belonging to an adolescent female. Skull 3 was found in 2001 and belonged to a young individual with erupting wisdom teeth.

Skull 4 is a very important find because it is the only toothless hominin skull found in such early sediments. It belonged to an elderly individual. Finally, Skull 5 was discovered in 2005.

Skull 5 was the first completely preserved adult hominin skull from the Early Pleistocene. It was found alongside a massive jaw named D2600.

The classification of these hominins is a subject of great scientific debate. Because of the large variation between the skulls, some researchers proposed a new species. In 2002, the large D2600 jaw was named the type specimen for Homo georgicus. This suggested that more than one species might have lived at Dmanisi. However, other researchers believe all the skulls belong to the same species. They argue the differences are just caused by sexual dimorphism, or differences between males and females. They also suggest the differences come from the different ages of the individuals. Some experts suggest they should be classified as Homo erectus georgicus.

The Dmanisi site provides a unique window into the lives of early humans.

The fossils show how much variation existed within early human populations. The presence of Oldowan stone tools shows their technology was quite archaic.
