Denisovans were a group of ancient humans. They lived in Asia a long time ago. Most of what we know comes from DNA. DNA is a tiny code found in our bodies.

Scientists first found them in a place called Denisova Cave. They found a small finger bone there in 2008. Since then, many more fossils have been found. Some were found in China and Laos.

Most of what we know about them comes from DNA. DNA is the tiny code found inside our bodies. This code helps scientists learn about people who lived long ago. We do not have many fossils from them yet. Because of this, scientists have not given them a formal species name.

Scientists learn about Denisovans by looking at very small things. They study mitochondrial DNA, which is a type of code passed down from mothers. They also study proteins, which are parts of cells.

By looking at these, they can see how Denisovans were related to others. For example, their DNA shows they were close to Neanderthals. They also found that Denisovans had dark skin, hair, and eyes. The first Denisovan was found in 2010. This was based on a small finger bone found in 2008. The bone came from the Denisova Cave in the Altai Mountains.

This cave is in Siberia, Russia. In 2019, a jawbone was found in the Baishiya Karst Cave on the Tibetan Plateau. This helped prove Denisovans lived in many different places. Later, a tooth was found in the Annamite Mountains of Laos.

Scientists also found remains in the Penghu channel and Harbin.

Many important fossils help tell this story. In June 2025, scientists studied the Harbin cranium. This skull was once called Homo longi. DNA and protein tests showed it was definitely a Denisovan.

Researchers also looked at the Xiahe mandible from China. This jawbone is more than 160,000 years old. They even found a special fossil nicknamed "Denny." Denny was a hybrid child. She had a Denisovan father and a Neanderthal mother.

Denisovans are linked to people living today. Long ago, Denisovans had children with modern humans. This is called interbreeding. Because of this, some people still carry Denisovan DNA.

About 5% of the DNA in Melanesians and Aboriginal Australians comes from Denisovans. In mainland Asians and Native Americans, the amount is much smaller, around 0.2%. Some studies show Oceanians have about 2.0% Denisovan ancestry. This shows that Denisovan populations once lived all across Asia.

Scientists identify Denisovans primarily through genetic evidence. They study mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), which is passed from mothers to children. They also look at endogenous proteins, which are molecules found inside cells.

By analyzing these, they can trace how Denisovans were related to other humans. For example, nuclear DNA shows they had close affinities with Neanderthals. Genetic evidence also suggests they had dark skin, dark eyes, and dark hair. Their physical build was likely similar to that of Neanderthals.

Physical features of Denisovans can be seen in their skeletal remains. The Harbin cranium, once called Homo longi, is a key specimen. This skull is low and long with very large brow ridges. It also has wide eye sockets and a large mouth.

Like Neanderthals, Denisovan jawbones show they lacked a chin. However, their faces were flatter than Neanderthal faces. They also had larger noses and very large molars. Their brain size was within the range of both Neanderthals and modern humans.

The discovery of Denisovans began in the Altai Mountains of Siberia. In 2008, archaeologists found a juvenile finger bone in the Denisova Cave.

In 2010, scientists identified this bone as a new type of human using mtDNA. Since then, many other sites have been found. These include the Baishiya Karst Cave on the Tibetan Plateau. Denisovan ancestry still exists in modern human populations today. This happened because Denisovans interbred with modern humans long ago. This genetic mixing left traces in many people living in Asia and the Pacific.

For example, Melanesians, Aboriginal Australians, and Filipino Negritos have about 5% Denisovan DNA. Some studies suggest Oceanians have roughly 2.0% ancestry. In contrast, mainland Asians and Native Americans have much lower levels, around 0.1% to 0.2%. These numbers prove that Denisovan populations once spread across vast distances in Asia.

Scientists continue to debate how to classify these ancient people. Some suggest they belong to a new species called Homo longi. Others have proposed names like Homo juluensis based on molar similarities. In 2025, researchers used DNA and protein analysis to link the Harbin cranium to Denisovans. This helped group several other fossils, like the Dali Man and the Yunxian Man, under the same umbrella. As more fossils are found, our map of the ancient human family tree grows more detailed. The study of Denisovans connects us to a deep and complex past.
