In contrast, Asian Homo erectus often had more massive brow ridges and faces. 
This taxonomic dispute is difficult because of the high level of variation found in the fossils. Some researchers, like Ian Tattersall, have noted that the number of fossils in the Homo erectus group is "unwieldy." This makes it hard to define exactly what the species is. A 2008 study by Karen L. Baab looked at how much variation exists within these groups. She found that the variation in Homo erectus was greater than in modern humans. However, it was still within the expected range for species like gorillas or orangutans. This suggests the group could be one very diverse species or several closely related ones.
Despite the naming debates, the importance of Homo ergaster is clear. They represent a major shift in how early humans lived and moved. Their ability to use advanced tools like hand axes changed their relationship with the world.
