Differential (mechanical device)

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A differential is a clever machine made of gears. It has three different drive shafts. The special thing about it is how it handles speed. The speed of one shaft is always the average of the other two.

This allows parts of a machine to move at different rates. It is a very useful tool for moving power. You can find them in cars, clocks, and even old computers.

Think about a car turning a corner on a road. The outer wheel must travel a longer path than the inner wheel. Because the path is longer, the outer wheel must spin faster.

Without a differential, the wheels would struggle to turn at different speeds. A differential transfers power from the engine to the wheels. It lets them spin at different rates while they turn.

This makes driving much smoother and easier.

People have used these gears for a very long time. Some researchers believe the Antikythera mechanism used one around 80 BC.

This ancient device helped show the phases of the Moon. In 1720, Joseph Williamson used a differential in a special clock. It helped the clock show solar time, like a sundial. Later, in 1827, Onésiphore Pecqueur patented a version for steam wagons. In 1876, James Starley made a version for bicycles.

There are many ways to build these gear systems. A ring-and-pinion design uses a small gear to turn a large ring.

This can also change the direction of the power. An epicyclic design is more compact and works well in all-wheel drive cars.

There is also a spur-gear design. This uses gears of equal size at each end.

Some special versions can even lock the wheels together. These are helpful for driving on bumpy, off-road ground.

Differentials do more than just help cars turn. They can even do math! In the past, people used large sets of gears as analogue computers.

These machines could add or subtract numbers using the rotation of the shafts. Even space explorers use them. The Spirit and Opportunity Mars rovers used differential gears.

These gears helped keep the rover body balanced on rocky ground. It is amazing how one idea can help on Earth and in space.
